I woke up on the bus last Friday morning after a great night of well-deserved sleep. The previous night in Wantaugh, Long Island marked the end of an eight-in-a-row run that took Loaded from Detroit and weaved us through to the Northeast. Often, it’s the THINGS and PEOPLE I see on the road that make for much more interesting stories than the common backstage view. As I stumbled out of the bus, I found myself in the parking lot of a quaint bayside hotel called the Freeport Inn and Boatel. Sound familiar? This is the one-and-the-same place where Joey Buttafuoco and his “Long Island Lolita” Amy Fisher had their much-publicized daytime trysts back in the early ’90s. But it wasn’t this experience alone that made that day interesting for me. Coming around the back end of the bus was a man who, obvious to me, had something to do with the hotel. He introduced himself as the general manager and commenced to show me to the café to get some coffee. Joseph Creamer, 29, spoke with rapid-fire excitement about what he was going to do with this hotel and the things he hoped to do for the community to help bring it back around from this latest recession. He also told me of his new position as vice president of the Freeport Chamber of Commerce, and the problems he was having with the old-guard mayor and his ilk. Right on the bay in Freeport, there sits an ugly and dilapidated… Read More »

By Duff McKagan The New American Business Person: It’s Not Who You Think It Is My job as a touring musician allows me the chance to see a lot of places. My job here as a financial columnist sharpens my skills of observation when I’m out on the road and makes me see things differently or to notice things I might have otherwise missed. A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how Huntington, West Virginia seemed to be a place that exemplified how America can and will recover from this recent economic downturn. I like to be able to highlight positivity and to shine a light on the things we can do to help pull ourselves up by our collective bootstraps. Well, I’ve just stumbled upon another little town that I think needs a mention. Let me explain. The other day, I woke up on my bus and hopped out to go into my hotel room. Apparently, I was in Freeport, Long Island—in New York state. We drive all night and at times I have no idea where I am at when I wake up. The Freeport Inn and Boatel offered clean, comfortable rooms right on the water (all for $111!). By the way, sometimes I will “tweet” if I make a cool find on a hotel or restaurant (I am Duff64, FYI). I tweeted this place and got a tweet back that this was the hotel where the Joey Buttafuco and Amy Fisher had their now-famous trysts back… Read More »

The Freeport Inn and Marina opened its doors just in time for the 1964 World’s Fair. The property featured 47 guest rooms, 30 boat slips, a 2000 sq. foot swimming pool, cabanas, a dock attendant, and the legendary Outrigger restaurant. It was quite unique for the time.

By The early 1970’s, the property began to blossom. Many wealthy people came to summer in the town of Freeport. Band Leader, Guy Lombardo, was a regular at the hotel and the outrigger restaurant. People still tell great tales of late night drinking and after hours swimming.

Due to the increase in hotel occupancy, in 1986, the outrigger officially closed it’s doors and13 new guestrooms were created in it’s space. At this time the pool was filled in and turned into a parking lot.

In 1994 The Freeport Inn was back in the spotlight as the centerpiece of the Joey Buttafuco and Amy Fischer scandal. Several desk clerks had to appear in court to testify and the hotel was featured on every major US television station.

Over the years several notable people have come through the doors. Professional wrestlers, actors, musicians and television personalities have all spent time at this creek side lodge. (General Manager Joe Creamer Pictured with Duff McKagan of Guns N Roses/ Velvet Revolver. (2009)

In 2011 the hotel opened ‘The Patio Marina Lounge.’ The Restaurant/ Lounge features a 30-foot bar, beautiful waterside dining, fire pits, cabanas and a waterfall. For the first time in it’s history room service will be an amenity.

The property is privately owned and operated. AAA diamond approved since 1971. We take great pride in it’s unique 1960’s architecture and have tried to preserve the integrity of its original design while providing interior upgrades like flat screen televisions and rain showers. The property is still currently under renovation with all rooms to be completed by 2012.
